February 2016 Exterior Indulgence Unboxing
Exterior Indulgence is a new handmade beauty subscription box that’s opening up and, as part of their opening activities, they hosted a giveaway on Instagram. I was lucky enough to win the giveaway, and now I’m taking the chance to review my prize, a sample of one of their boxes.
Because all of the items in Exterior Indulgence are handmade, I won’t be able to analyze the value of the box based on the retail price of the items included inside. Instead, I’ll provide my reactions to each item and allow you to make your own judgments about what they’re worth.
The first item I pulled out of the box was a 4 oz container of 100% Dead Sea Salt Bath Soak in an oatmeal + milk + honey scent. Dead sea salt soaks/scrubs are usually pricey, so this is a nice item to have included in the box. It smells good and has the bonus of sounding like a maraca when shaken!
The second item was a 4 oz bar of shea honey oatmeal soap. Being a utilitarian, I’m always happy to get soap, which can always be put to use. The scent of this bar is subtle, so it should appeal to a wide variety of people.
The third item was a 2 oz bottle of body oil spray in the oatmeal + milk + honey scent. I don’t personally use body oil, but it might be something to add to my beauty regimen. From what I’ve read, it has nourishing and moisturizing effects similar to a lotion.
Speaking of lotion...the fourth item was a 4 oz bottle of body lotion in the oatmeal + milk + honey scent. I tried to do some research on oil vs. lotion for moisture, and it seems like the choice between them falls largely to preference. Having both options in Exterior Indulgence, then, allows you to pick which product you prefer, and if you aren’t picky, you’ll have the option to use one after the other has been depleted.
The fifth item was another bar of soap, which pleased me. This sample size of soap was 1 oz in the lemon teagrass scent. It had a pleasant, lemony smell and I look forward to using it.
The sixth item was a set of oatmeal + milk + honey scented “bath tea bags.” I’ll admit that I’ve never used these before, and I’m not quite sure how they work. I assume it’s similar to the bath soak in that you set them in the water and they make the bath more pleasant via the scent. In addition to adding more labeling, as I suggested in my video review, I might also suggest that Exterior Indulgence includes instructions for how to best use each product, especially for products that are less common.
The seventh item was a stick of strawberry-flavored lip balm. This is a nice little item that can be tucked away in a purse or pocket for easy use and lip balm is something that most people like to have on hand, so it seems like a good addition to the box.
The eighth item was a 3 oz bar of mango aloe soap. I think this is my favorite item of the box, because it’s soap, which I like, and I really enjoy the scent (mango is one of my favorite fruits.) I think Exterior Indulgence was smart to scent most of the box’s items similarly, but I appreciate that they diverged from that trend with this bar.
The ninth and final item was a soap dish to hold all of the new soap I received! A great product that complements the other items in the box. Like the beauty products, this soap dish was handmade.
Having won this box in a giveaway, I’m incredibly pleased with the items I received. However, are they worth the $24.92 to $30 that Exterior Indulgence charges?
My answer is, “it depends.” The cost of these beauty products is likely higher than if you go to a grocery store and get their store brand equivalents. But if you care about products being natural and handmade, Exterior Indulgence is likely well worth the cost. They are also offering a 50% off promotion for a limited time via this link, which can give you the opportunity to try the box for yourself and decide if you want to pay full price in the future.
Disclaimer: I received this box as a giveaway prize.
