October 2016 "Doctor Strange" Marvel Collector Corps Review
Marvel Collector Corps is a bi-monthly subscription box from Funko that includes exclusive items related to different Marvel properties. Because the items are all exclusives, it’s always a mystery what you’ll get and you’re guaranteed to not get a repeat from another subscription box or purchase. For that reason, it’s one of my favorite subscription boxes!
You can see my previous Marvel Collector Corps reviews here (newest to oldest):
The theme for the October 2016 Marvel Collector Corps box was “Doctor Strange”, which is well-timed with the upcoming movie. Specifically, the movie is set to be released on Friday, November 4th, with some early screenings taking place the night before.
I’ll admit that I hadn’t had much exposure to Doctor Strange prior to production of the movie, but I’ve heard good things about the film and plan to see it when it’s in theaters.
Now, onto the box!
As always, the Marvel Collector Corps box started out with a collectible patch and pin. The patch depicts Doctor Strange in a majestic pose, while the pin depicts the Eye of Agamotto, an object that resides in Doctor Strange’s iconic amulet. I’m not big into the patches and pins, but I think they are a fun inclusion for people who like to collect them.
The first primary item in the box was a t-shirt with a POP!-styled design of Doctor Strange. Wearables are a tough category for the Marvel Collector Corps. I personally prefer the non-shirt wearables such as the hat from the Spiderman box and the scarf from the Guardians of the Galaxy box, but many other subscribers prefer the t-shirts, so Funko really can’t win with all of us.
Outside of the fact that I prefer non-shirt wearables, I think this is a decent item. It’s clear that Funko attempted to capture the magical side of Doctor Strange, and I think they did it as best as they could with the runes and lines.
The second primary item was a Doctor Strange comic book with an exclusive POP!-styled cover. Funko has regularly been including comic books in the Marvel Collector Corps boxes, and I think they’re a great item to have. They give an opportunity for people like me, who are less familiar with the comics, to get exposed to them in a guided manner. (It can be intimidating for a newbie to know where to start with a series.) At the same time, even for avid comic enthusiasts, the unique variant covers ensure that each subscriber will get something new to collect.
The third primary item was the centerpiece of most Marvel Collector Corps boxes: a POP! Figure. This particular figure depicts Doctor Strange levitating in his astral projection state. The features can be a bit difficult to make out due to the glittery gold of the plastic, but I like that it matches the other “astral projection” figures from Funko. Most of all, I think it’s super cool that his cape acts both as his cape (obviously), but also as the base for the figure. The figure can stand freely through the power of the cape alone.
The fourth and final primary item in the box was a Doctor Strange mug from the Funko Home line. Although I normally appreciate Funko Home products, I wasn’t too enthused about them. First of all, I find that the Funko mugs are not very practical for drinking out of, which limits their practicality. More than that, though, I don’t think this mug offers much that is unique to Doctor Strange. At first glance, it could easily be confused for Tony or Howard Stark.
Overall, I would consider this a par-for-the-course box from Marvel Collector Corps. The items all felt “safe” and satisfied the main expectations for the box, such as including a POP! Figure and t-shirt.
The box does have me thinking: are the other characters from Doctor Strange not relevant enough to get any items? I thought that perhaps one of the items would be dedicated to a different character, such as the Ancient One or Karl Mordo. But I haven’t watched the film yet, so perhaps their roles are smaller than I thought they would be.
Still, the Marvel Collector Corps is always a fun box to get. It’s always great to get the exclusive items that Funko delivers! Although this wasn’t my favorite box from them, it wasn’t my least favorite either, and I believe I’ll appreciate the items even more after I see the movie.
The December box theme is “X-men”, and I look forward to seeing what it includes! During my childhood, my favorite among the X-men was Rogue, so I’ll be hoping to get something with her - although I don’t expect it. The box is more likely to feature Mystique, Professor X, Wolverine, etc. because they’re the most popular right now.
