May 2016 SnackSack Review
When subscription box service CrateJoy offered a 2-day sale of up to 50% on a selection of their boxes, I told myself I could pick one subscription to buy. I ended up getting a 6-month subscription to SnackSack, a healthy snack subscription. I hadn’t heard much about SnackSack previously, but food is always good to have on hand. So, how did my first box perform?
The first item I took out of the box was a small bag of Cabo Chips in a blue corn tortilla flavor. I’m not big into tortilla chips, but I think it’s a fair snack to include in the box, and the 1.5oz bag has an estimated value of $2.
The second item was a small bag of sea salt pasta chips from Vintage Italia. The small bag alone would’ve been a lackluster item, but it came paired with a coupon for a free full-size bag of the pasta chips in the flavor of my choice. I’ve had these pasta chips before in the Alfredo variety and loved them, so I’m looking forward to picking up a bag. With the coupon, this item has a value of $5.
The third item was a small pouch of sea salt baked crunchy chickpeas from Chic-A-Peas. I haven’t seen this product before and I’m interested in giving it a try. The 2oz size I receive sells for around $2.
The fourth and fifth items I received were two Snakaroons from Laughing Giraffe Organics. They provided small macarons in Lemon and Vanilla flavors. I love desserts, so I appreciated these items a lot. They sell for about $1 each, giving them a $2 value together.
The sixth item was a bag of hawaiian BBQ chips from One Potato Two Potato. This is a “meh” item for me, because I’m not big into the flavor and the 2oz bag has a regular value of $1.
The seventh item was a pouch of pitted green olives from Olympos. I don’t like olives, but I think this is a cool product to have included in the box because it’s an unusual snack item. The 1.05oz bag also has a decent value of $2.
I withdrew the eighth and ninth items in a different order, but I’m bundling them together in this review because they’re a set - two pouches of Fru-Licious smoothies. One had a banana flavor and the other had a strawberry flavor. Being a lover of sweets, I liked these items. Surprisingly, the smoothies were a bit too sweet for my taste. However, I still appreciated having the chance to try them. These pouches sell for about $0.50 each, suggesting a $1 value for the pair.
The tenth item was a Raw Rev bar in a Chocolate Espresso flavor. On one hand, I was happy to have finally gotten a chocolate-flavored item - they’re my fave! On the other hand, I wasn’t too enthusiastic about the espresso infusion, nor the fact that it’s a snack bar rather than an actual delicacy. Still, it’s a fair item that retails for around $2.
The eleventh item was a Munk Pack squeeze in a raspberry coconut oatmeal variety. This item impressed me because, while being easily snackable, I think it goes beyond the realm of a mere snack in terms of nutritional value and satiation. The squeeze has a similarly impressive value of $3.
The twelfth item was a pouch of Ona Peanut Butter Cookies. Although I prefer chocolate, I like peanut butter desserts and I expect I’ll enjoy these cookies. They also retail for a decent $3 per pouch, adding to the box’s value.
The thirteenth and final item was a small packet of crunchy almond butter from Barney’s Butter. I don’t use nut butters often, but this will be nice to have on hand in case I ever need it. This 0.6oz pouch is worth about $1.
Overall, the May 2016 SnackSack contained thirteen different items that had a cumulative value of about $24. This box value seems fair in comparison to the box’s cost of $22.45 to $24.95.
In terms of curation, I believe the SnackSack did a fair job of including a mix of savory and sweet items and exposing me to food products I hadn’t previously seen. However, I was disappointed at the lack of chocolate. If the tortilla chips or hawaiian BBQ chips had been replaced with a chocolatey item, I probably would’ve enjoyed the box more. Still, I appreciated a majority of the boxes items and was happy with the value I received. The burlap sack in which most of the items arrived is also neat and I plan to use it for item storage in the future.
