December 2016 "X-Men" Marvel Collector Corps Review
Marvel Collector Corps is a bi-monthly subscription box from Funko that includes exclusive items related to different Marvel properties. Because the items are all exclusives, it’s always a mystery what you’ll get and you’re guaranteed to not get a repeat from another subscription box or purchase. For that reason, it’s one of my favorite subscription boxes!
You can see my previous Marvel Collector Corps reviews here (newest to oldest):
Each month’s theme is typically tied to an upcoming or recently released Marvel feature, and this month’s theme was “X-Men”. I’m not aware of any significant X-Men media coming out except the trailer for the Logan movie, so perhaps that is what inspired this box.
The X-Men isn’t my favorite Marvel property, but they’re cool in their own way. Let’s see what the box had to offer!
Like always, the box started off with a collectible pin and patch. The pin featured Magneto’s helmet, while the patch had an image of Storm.
The first item I took out of the December 2016 Marvel Collector Corps was an issue of the “Champions” comic book. This edition features an exclusive variant cover of Cyclops in POP-form blasting his eye ray.
I personally am not big into the comics in these boxes because I don’t read them for fear of damaging the exclusive variant covers. However, because the box revolves around different comic-based fandoms, I believe the comics are appropriate to include. It’s probable that a lot of subscribers to the box already have the original versions of the comics, so they don’t have a need to read the ones they receive and can simply collect them per the box’s name.
The second item was the month’s shirt: a typographic rendering of the Xavier school logo. As fun as the POP figures are, I prefer the shirts that exclude them. This particular shirt resembles a lot of non-fandom school tees, so it’s something that can be worn everyday without seeming peculiar.
In addition to the nice typographic design, the shirt features a black lining around the neck and sleeves that gives it a unique flair.
The third item was a figure of Mystique from the Rock Candy line. I haven’t yet gotten a Rock Candy figure, so I’m excited to have received this one!
Here is a picture of her out of the box. She comes with a stand and her head bobbles.
And on to the fourth and final item of the box: a POP! Rides of Wolverine and his motorcycle. This is a super cool item that combines a traditional POP! sculpture with the the novelty of a POP! vehicle. The coolness of the item extends beyond its novelty, however; it’s also well-designed. I was particularly impressed that the wheels on the motorcycle actually have a rubbery feel.
Originally I thought that Wolverine was attached to his bike, but when I tried to put them back in the box to take the final picture for this review, he popped off! Nothing was broken, though; that’s exactly how it’s supposed to be. Wolverine and his bike can be separated so you can display them together or individually. It’s like getting two POP!s in one box!
Overall, the December 2016 Marvel Collector Corps box was another good month for the subscription. It wasn’t my favorite MCC box, but also wasn’t my least favorite. I thought the theme was fair with the release of the Logan trailer and the box had a good mix of figures and other Funko items. I believe the shirt will be more wearable than some of the previous shirts, further adding to the box’s value. My prediction from my last MCC review that this box would feature Mystique, Professor X (as in the Xavier School) and Wolverine appeared to be correct. ;)
The next box will be delivered in February 2017 and the theme is “Superhero Showdowns”. I’m less certain about what that box will contain, and I look forward to finding out!
Recommended for: Funko and/or Marvel fans.
