August 2016 "Spiderman" Marvel Collector Corps Review
Marvel Collector Corps is a bi-monthly subscription box from Funko that includes exclusive items related to different Marvel properties. Because the items are all exclusives, it’s always a mystery what you’ll get and you’re guaranteed to not get a repeat from another subscription box or purchase. For that reason, it’s one of my favorite subscription boxes!
You can see my previous Marvel Collector Corps reviews here:
The theme for the August 2016 Marvel Collector Corps box was “Spider-Man.” I’m not aware of any big Spider-Man activities going on in the pop culture world aside from news of the Homecoming movie, but Spider-Man’s a cool dude, so I’m happy to celebrate him at any time.
Every Marvel Collector Corps box opens with a collectible patch and pin. I’m not big into these, but I can see how they’d be cool to someone who has found a use for them. It’s nice being able to keep track of the months you’ve received the box. This month’s pin features the iconic spider and the patch features Spidey’s face.
The first item I took out of the box was a copy of The Amazing Spider Man #16 with an exclusive variant cover. The regular edition of this comic came out only a few days before the August Marvel Collector Corps arrived, so it was good timing! I usually prefer compendiums to individual comics, but it’s always nice to get new comics near their release date.
The second item was a big, adorable Fabrikations sculpture! I love this item and I’ll likely display it prominently in my new apartment. Not only does the sculpture look cool, but it’s made of a highly durable fabric, it’s freestanding, and you can spin the head around.
I’m not sure how often I’ll spin the head, but hey, it’s always great to have options!
This is my first Fabrikations sculpture, and I’m glad it’s of Spidey, one of my favorite Marvel superheroes.
The third item was a nifty-looking baseball cap. I haven’t yet acquired a favorite baseball cap, and I think this might be the one. It features a cool “The Amazing Spiderman” patch design on the front along with the standard shiny stickers that mark new hats.
The coolness of the hat doesn’t end with the front, though. The back side of the hat features a sewn spider design and an adjustable red band.
Inside, the hat features a cool Marvel/POP print under the bill and a Funko/Marvel print on the interior.
All in all, I love the hat. This hat was provided as this month’s wearable in place of a t-shirt, so I know some people will complain about that, and I think that’s fair. Many people like to collect the shirts and I imagine it’s a bummer when they don’t get one. However, as someone who loves and regularly wears last box’s Spider Gwen shirt, I already have more than enough shirts. I’m glad to have received a different type of wearable, something that I’ll be able to get more use out of.
Finally, the fourth and final item was a POP! Figure, sticking to the roots of the subscription. This is a creative figure of Spidey mid-jump and mid-web sling that’s held up by a clear stand. Better yet, it’s a bobblehead. I love bobbleheads.
The August 2016 Marvel Collector Corps offered another great collection of Marvel-related goodies from Funko. I think they made a good shift this month in highlighting the iconic Spider-man versus last month, which had more obscure characters - my belief is that it’s good to have both types of heroes and heroines highlighted. There were fewer items this month than last month, but I preferred the types of items that were included this month, so I don’t feel ripped off. Personally, I’d rather have the sweet Fabrikations sculpture than two more Mystery Minis. All in all, I really enjoyed the box and I’m looking forward to October’s “Doctor Strange” theme!
